preaching was held for in old school house, previous to building, and rev. pingree, now of grove, avas active in - ing the organization. the methodist episcopal society was one of first formed in village, and commenced a building about 1843, which has since been, greatly im- proved. as its early records have been lost, or , we have no means of an account of organization of society. it is - ous, and one of largest religious denominations in city. in 1859, according to statement of free methodist, a of the members of methodist episcopal church became unusually noisy from ''getting blessed. howard, unused to , under- took to them quiet, but failed. they objected to interference ; a meeting was called to their case in , and twenty-one of were expelled. organizing immediately, under the celebrated dr. redfield, they re- solved themselves into methodist church. their building was originally an elevator, belonging to . wheeler, and standing just north of s. jones' vacated elevator now stands. there are between fifty and sixty members. father o'donnell, from joliet, had visited the catholics of st. charles occasionally, and administered to spiritual wants. the membership is , and the number on increase. journalism commenced in county with publication at . charles of a sheet devoted mainly to presentation of religious views of . john thomas, its editor, who had moved to place from kendall county, and brought a press with .
thomas commenced the publication of st. charles patriot, fox river advocate and kane county herald, which eventually failed per- haps from a of energy to its name before the public but continuing a of . in' the fall of , it was burned out and the press destroyed, but minard purchased another for good of place, and the paper was issued as fox river advocate for time, by . in the years which followed there successively appeared the people's platform, the demo- cratic platform, the kane county democrat, the democratic argus, the /st.
